Long Tail Keywords and PLR

Author: Dr. Kheti A. Sahure

How many sites do you own where the traffic generated from long tail keywords far exceeds that of the main keyword or keywords?

Approximately between 50% and 85% of our sites gain most of their traffic through the use of long tail keywords.

Based on this, how can we exploit the long tail keywords of niches and micro-niches in a way that will maximize traffic, effective customer reach, and ROI without possibly "spamming" the search engines?

What are Long Tail Keywords?

This is an excellent question because part of the answer is based upon the level or degree of marketing competitiveness of the selected long tail keywords; and many iMarketers will have established some demographic parameters (i.e., variables) for their main and long tail keywords. In our case, a demographic region Long tail keywords are basically keywords consisting of between two and five highly specific words that contain the main keyword (usually, the name of the niche market) plus other keywords. For instance, if the main keywords were "cosmetic jaw surgery", then a classic example of a long tail keyword would be--"cosmetic jaw surgery in Brownsville, TX".

Savvy iMarketers choose their long tail keywords based upon low competition in terms of word or phrase usage, keyword density, keyword popularity and uniqueness within the realm of Search Engine Marketing (SEM) and Search Engine Optimization (SEO). As another example, you may very well think or query--"So what does it matter because hardly anyone searches for 'cosmetic jaw surgery in Brownsville, TX'"? You are absolutely correct in your observations.

Further, suppose you have 30 web pages or mini-sites where each targets different long tail keywords?

Now let us informally estimate that the average number of visitors based upon the use of one of those long tail keywords results in 100 hits per month. You then multiply that number (100) by 30 and end up with 3,000 unique visitors each month.

Now ask yourself the following important questions:

How hard would it be to get your page(s) ranked using those keywords?

Answer: This should be relatively easy because most long tail keywords are chosen with the objective to get ranked by the major search engines. As a matter of fact, all that is required would be to upload a web page that has content targeted to a long tail keyword phrase. Once they get indexed by a major search engine or more, you may discover that your web page ranking on the first page was achieved rather quickly.

Moreover, you should not forget about targeting your main keywords (three to fifteen words) for your niche site too. You will have to be patient because of the necessary SEO methods to be applied to your web page(s) well before seeing any decent or significant traffic coming in from those particular keywords.

Why not at the same time, build pages that will gain traffic faster and act as window (doorway or gateway) pages into the main content of your website?

And as an even larger concern--"What if you do not have any related content, do not have the time or writing skills to produce targeted content?"
